Program Overview (from the program website):

Each year, the Museum offers ten-month paid internships (September through June) for college graduates interested in teaching diverse audiences. Intern Educators receive intensive training in museum-education philosophy and practice from Museum staff members who monitor, observe, and guide their professional development. Intern Educators lead the majority of the Museum’s Guided Gallery Visits for school groups and play an integral role in the planning and implementation of educational programs for school, youth, family, and adult audiences. Regular seminars introduce interns to other Brooklyn Museum departments and to education programs at other New York museums. Interns receive a stipend of $14,800 (subject to payroll taxes), health insurance, and free public transportation for ten months.

Intern Educators are required to work full-time, including one weekend day. All applicants must be eligible to work in the United States and are responsible for securing their own immigration documents. The Museum will not sponsor immigrant visa applications for Intern Educators, although in the past, interns have worked with international student organizations to secure non-immigrant visas, such as the J-1 or F-1. Proof of the applicant’s ability to work in the United States must be submitted to the Museum before the start of work.

Education Division Intern Educators can work in the Adult Programs Department or in both the School Programs and Youth and Family Programs departments.

School Programs and Youth and Family Programs serve the community through a variety of activities, including student tours, weekend drop-in programs for families, and professional development seminars for teachers. Working with these groups in the Museum’s galleries and assisting in program planning and the development of educational materials prepares Intern Educators for future careers in museum education.

The Adult Programs Department develops activities such as gallery talks, workshops, lectures, film screenings, and performing arts series in conjunction with special exhibitions and permanent collections. Intern Educators assist in all aspects of expanding the Museum’s local adult audiences through teaching, researching, programming, marketing, and logistical support. They also teach school groups.
