Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) is an independent organization that uses medicine and science to stop mass atrocities and severe human rights violations against individuals. As one of the original coordinating committee members of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, PHR shared the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize. PHR is seeking an Asylum Program Associate (APA) to coordinate case placement for survivors of torture and other human rights abuses who are seeking asylum in the United States. The APA will assign cases for forensic evaluation to PHR’s nationwide network of health professional volunteers, recruit new health professionals, organize training seminars, oversee relationships with attorneys, and will support general asylum program operations. Key Responsibilities include:Conduct case placement to connect asylum seekers’ attorneys with health professionals who provide pro bono forensic medical evaluations. Enter intake form data for all cases into Raiser’s Edge and link cases appropriately to relevant attorneys and health professionals. Scan and file all forms in soft and hard file locations. Follow up with attorneys to confirm case receipt and placement. Reply to inquiries and requests for information about the Network from both Foster good relations between the clients’ attorneys and health professional volunteers. Trouble-shoot case placement and other HP/atty issues as they arise and intervene when necessary. Recruit new health professional members and plan training events. Help identify geographic areas where recruitment and/or training is needed to shore up the Network. Collect and analyze Asylum Network statistics for various purposes; track case outcomes. Conduct research of asylum/immigration/torture related topics as needed. Write blog posts and other web content about programmatic initiatives, asylum law, and torture. Provide logistic support to global anti-torture project (currently focused on Central Asia). Any other general programmatic support as needed. QualificationsBachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred; Minimum of one year experience in a professional setting, preferably in a human rights or other international non-governmental organization desired; Previous experience with asylum helpful; Spanish proficiency a plus; Demonstrated commitment to the human rights of asylum seekers and other immigrants in the US; Exceptional analytical, writing, and verbal skills; superior research skills; Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, effectively, and professionally in a multi-faceted organization; Capacity to recruit and manage relationships with volunteer health professionals; Mature judgment, strong sense of integrity, and capacity to work with minimal supervision; Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and follow-through; Strategic thinker with excellent communication and interpersonal skills; Significant cross-cultural experience; Experience using Raiser’s Edge or other relational database strongly preferred; Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
